Anusara Yoga

Anusara is a Sanskrit word which means ‘Flowing with Grace’. A form of Hatha Yoga, Anusara Yoga blends clear and universal principles of alignment based on sound biomechanical and anatomical principles and a heart oriented, joyful and respectful approach to practice.

imageAt the very heart of Anusara is it’s first principle, opening to Grace. We open to the mystery of life, the intangible element of beauty as it is expressed within and all around us. In our asana practice, opening to grace invites us focus our attention not only on the form of the body in a pose, but on the attitude and actions in the pose, resulting in a full expression from the inside out.

As unique individuals we come to the mat for a variety of reasons, perhaps we experience physical pain and our wish is to be free from pain, perhaps we are emotionally blocked and seek balance and opening of our hearts, perhaps we seek mental clarity or deep peace within ourselves, perhaps we yearn for meaning in our lives. When our intention informs our practice yoga becomes a process which transforms our life in the direction of our highest aspirations.

Alignment principles awaken our awareness of how various parts of our selves are integrated and interconnected. We line up in a way that respects our individual body structure, supports our joints, and clears pathways for the optimal circulation and flow. Universal principles of alignment encourage us to express our unique potential.

Action in an asana is the power and energetic process through which our deepest intentions are expressed. We create balance between the dynamic pulsation of energies that integrate and provide stability and connection and expand and offer freedom and aspiration toward our dreams. Anusara Yoga offers concepts of loops and spirals of energy that make our Yoga a living, dynamic expression of our Selves.

Through its focus on the three aspects of attitude, alignment and action, Anusara Yoga offers us a tangible practice to support us in living from our luminous and intelligent bodies and hearts.

We foster the recognition of our connections to each other, to our environment, and to the world and. Through the process of yoga we naturally begin to make more life affirming and compassionate choices not only for ourselves but also for the ‘more than human worlda’.
