Embodied Anatomy one day Workshopimage

For yoga students and those seeking applicable and deeper understanding of their body

Sunday April 29, 2018
9:30 – 12:30 and 2 – 4pm
Cost: $145
To register please click here

Explore an integrated, experiential knowledge of anatomy that deepens your understanding in your own practice and echoes out into your life. Discover how a deeper understanding of your embodiment contributes to growing strength, freedom and healing in the body.

In this workshop we will inhabit yoga as a way to bring intention into action from the inside out as we inquire into:

• The body, structure, tissue types, and connectivity
• Bony and energetic axes of the body and why curves and clear pathways matter
• Structure and movement of major joints of shoulders and hips
• Connective tissue: what it is, how it functions, and how the way in which we approach our practice contributes to wellness of these vital tissues

Our time together will be an exploration of wholeness rather than one focused on isolating and naming parts (which is a common approach to anatomical learning). We’ll be looking at principles in action and networks of connectivity that create and support movement and explore how our practice contributes to optimal function throughout our lifespan.

Hanna Somatic Education (also known as Clinical Somatics) is a safe, gentle and common sense approach to eliminating chronic muscle pain for the long term. It is a sensory motor training method that teaches you to reverse the root cause of most chronic muscle pain and gives you strategies to reduce muscle tension and pain in the future. In Hanna Somatics class, we teach you, through simple movements, how to relax the muscles that contribute to your pain.

Hanna Somatics is based on the life work of Thomas Hanna. He began as a Feldenkrais practitioner, and developed his own method of Somatic Education after studying neurology at the University of Miami Medical School. It was there that he did research into the muscular ways in which all humans respond to stress reflexes and how these full body reflexes can habituate at the level of the central nervous system, causing muscular pain that contributes to many common conditions.

Hanna Somatics Education goes to the root of most chronic muscular pain: the brain. To understand how to eliminate your pain, it is important to understand what causes it in the first place. Hanna Somatics is not a passive therapy - it is a practice.

Hanna Somatics movements retrains your brain and teaches you to be aware what your body adaptation and habits are by addressing Sensory Motor Amnesia (SMA). SMA is the condition of chronically tight muscles that develops due to accidents, injuries, surgeries, and on-going stress. These muscles have learned to remain contracted because your brain and nervous system has taught them to. Because the brain controls the muscles, the brain must be involved in teaching them to relax, release and remember how to move again.

Hanna somatic movements is EDUCATION - clients are taught specific skills that improve one’s ability to be self-sense, self-adjust and self-correct so they move, pain-free, with increased mobility, balance and coordination.

What is Restorative Yoga?

imageRestorative yoga is a term we could use for yoga practice in general, as all our practices, when done with sensitivity to our present moment needs, restore our energy, our innate vitality, joy, and balance.

What has come to be known as ‘Restorative Yoga’, and the way we are using the term here, is to describe a practice that is less active than a general asana (posture) based class. It utilises equipment including, most commonly, bolsters and blankets, with some poses adding the resources of blocks, straps, sandbags, and chairs, to support the body enabling longer, relaxed holds in beneficial postures resulting in physiological effects. Restorative Yoga poses offered in our classes can be held anywhere from 2 to 15 minutes. At Yoga from the Heart our studio offers an abundance of bolsters, stacks of clean, good quality blankets, and additional equipment to meet any student’s needs for support and adaptation that may result from injury, restriction, or limitation. Comfort is emphasised and warmth, dim lighting, and a safe and supportive environment are part of the magic of a Restorative Yoga class.

Why practice Restorative Yoga?
imageOne of the most profound physiological effects of Restorative Yoga is its influence on the stress response. The stress response is profoundly detrimental to our health and well being. When it is chronic many symptoms can result including muscular pain and tension, digestive disorders, headaches, immune system compromise, sleep disturbance, anxiety, fatigue and more. It is interesting that the science of Ayurveda (a word meaning ‘science of life’ and describing the ‘medical’ approach deriving from the same roots as our yoga practice) digestive system health and balance is seen as being THE most important influence on health and that this is one of the first systems to become out of balance when we are experiencing stress.

There are well researched reflexes in the nervous system that can shift us out of the stress response (also known as fight, flight, or freeze) into the relaxation response (also known as rest and digest) and it is these reflexes and responses that Restorative Yoga awakens and strengthens. The effect is deep nourishment and healing of the body, quieting the mind and uplifting the spirits.

When we change our physical shape through these postures (whether in a more active, or a more passive yoga class) we change our state (the state of our mind and the inner flavour of our experience of life). We shape shift to state shift.

What is the flavour of Restorative Yoga classes with Clare?

image“I love to share Restorative Yoga with people and feel blessed to be able to do so. What I offer is an offering on of what I have learned, from my teachers, and from my own practice. I studied with Judith Lasater in 2005 in San Francisco and became certified with her as a Restorative Yoga Trainer as well as assisting her when she visited Australia a couple of years later, and hosting her in Hobart twice. Part of our training in San Francisco was with Roger Cole, an expert in the anatomy and physiology of sleep, rest, and Restorative Yoga. In 2013 I did iRest Yoga Nidra training with Richard Miller and now blend these principles with Restorative Yoga postures to create what I feel is truly a divine blend of practices that permeates all the koshas (layers or sheathes of the body described by yoga: the physical body, energy body, emotions, mind, and the body of ‘bliss’, that feeling of timeless, formless ‘be-ing’). Much of what is experienced is beyond that which words in their ‘usual’ usage can articulate and so I also weave in poetry and prose which to me touches and expresses what other ways of using language cannot. What continues to amaze me is that by being together and sharing these practices we all contribute to the deeply nurturing experience of these sessions. I am honoured to share the practice with you.”
